As you know, last night was the Superbowl. Everyone knows that people watch the the Superbowl, but WATCH for the new commercials. So there we were about 21 of us waiting to see the new ads when spanish commercials come on. People started yelling, complaining and checking to see if it was being shown on another network aside from ABC. Nope. A couple of times, a real Superbowl commercial would come on only to be cut off 5 seconds later to show spanish commercials that are old as hell.

It seems that the PR cable company must have made some deal to black out the american commercials in favor of showing old Medalla Light, Coors Light and car commercials. I'm guessing that people who have Direct TV or another cable provider were probably able to see the ads, but anyone in the metropolitan area with OneLink Communications cable were screwed. It really did suck. This is the first time they've done this with the Superbowl, but not the first time something like this has happened.

OneLink is just the newest company to buy out the old cable company. Before them, we had Adelphia...but as you might have heard, the CEO of that CA based company got into some legal trouble and so on. Adelphia once blacked out all the pre-fights on this one boxing pay-per-view ticket and only showed the main match. People were furious and they got a lot of sh*t for that.

Also, sometimes the local channels will buy the rights to big shows like the Oscars. When they do that, they block the ABC, CBS or NBC signal for those hours and transmit the show on their channel. So this blacking out commercials or buy of showing rights isn't new here. But it sure did suck.

So I saw no Superbowl ads. :(

Superbowl Time!

It looks like it's going to be a good game and we here will be rooting for the Steelers.
I hope the commercials are good too. Some of them have sucked in recent years.

Verena and I hung out last night in Old San Juan. We went to the bar called The Pink Skirt. The music there is usually really good. So we're chillin' having a drink and watching this drunk ass tourist get her groove on. She was dancing ever since we got there, but like sloppy dancing and grinding to electronica. It was funny.

At one point the music changed to hip hop and she got even crazier. She went up to the guy she'd been dancing with and continues the grind. At one point she squatted to low and her sun dress rode up reaveling to everyone there the fact that she was going comando that night. We just busted out laughing. Oh the story doesn't end there.

Then this chick leans on the DJ booth's wall and the guy continues to dance with her. She lifts her leg up to the dude's hip and continue this raunchy grinding dance session. Now, I don't know if anyone complained. People there just seemed to be disgusted and entertained at the same time, so I don't know. But the next thing I know, the bouncer walks over to them and points the flashlight at them. He then pulls the guy away from the girl. I guess the guy said some sh*t and the bouncer bounced him out of the bar. The girl just sat down next to this other guy she was with as if she hadn't been the instigator of all the gross dancing. Poor guy, but it was still hilarious to watch.

Verena makes it into the PR paper! Of course it's in spanish, but check it out anyway. She's in town with her choir and they've been performing in different locations on the island. Pretty cool.

After spending many late nights watching the live coverage of the Australian Open, I completely missed the final.

I knew it was on saturday, but for some reason it didn't occur to me to check the schedule. I'm not sure what I thought, but I woke up saturday morning and one of my first thoughts were "I think I missed the game". And I did since it was on really early saturday morning. I tried to see if it would be repeated which it was, but I only caught the end of the game and the trophy ceremony. Mauresmo won.

Such an odd way to win a grad slam, isn't it? First Clijster injures her ankle and can't continue playing. Then Henin-Hardenne quits because of stomach issues probably related to the illness that kept her out of the game a while back. Even so, you can't take anything away from Mauresmo. She had been playing great all though out the tournament and was well on her way to win.

The men's final...I didn't even attempt to watch that. This time I knew when it was going to be on, but since it was at 4:30am my time, I chose sleep over tennis. :) Federer won as expected. He's like the new Sampras, expected to win everything and he pretty much does, so it sort of gets boring to watch...in my humble opinion.

So I've been watching the Australian Open. The games have been shown live on ESPN2, but later at night like after midnight. Trying to watch the games and not succumb to the sleepiness you naturally feel is hard. Get a buddy on the phone for a couple of hours and that helps to stay awake.

There have been some great games like watching Martina Hingis play again after coming out of a 3 year retirement. Last night's games were REALLY good. I was just hoping that they wouldn't go on for too long, but then again it was obvious that they would go into 3 sets. Justine Henin-Hardenne vs. Maria Sharapova was great to watch. But Amelie Mauresmo vs Kim Clijster was so much more intense. All these people seem to be baseline players, so the rallies were sometimes endlessly good. It sucks that Clijster twisted her ankle in the 3rd set and couldn't finish the set. It was an "OUCH! OH NO!" moment...which ESPN just had to repeat over and over again. Painful.

And what was up with Kiefer throwing his racket at Grosjean? Ok so he didn't throw it directly at him, but he did throw it in the direction of where he had to hit the ball to clearly distract him. Bad, bad, bad. Only guilty people try to play it off as much as he did.

Anyway...on to Saturday finals. :)

Movies I’ve seen lately:

  1. Hustle And Flow – Good movie. It’s quite entertaining and funny at times. Terrance Howard is such a good actor, I like his movies. You can really feel his characters desperation through out the movie. And it’s just funny hearing DJ Qualls say things like “ok, now let’s smoke that joint”.
  2. The Cave – Crap movie. I mean, it was stupid all around. People get trapped in this cave and mutate because of a parasite. Not even the fact that this movie had a pretty beautiful cast helped it any.
  3. Hostel – Yet another stupid movie. I don’t understand the hype around this movie. I like a horror-gorish film as much as the next person, but c’mon. The movie was slow, the acting was horrible and the plot was dull. The torture scenes didn’t impress me either.
  4. Underworld: Evolution – OMG! So f*cking good! I loved this movie. It was more of what I loved from the first one. I liked the fact that it was the same cast as in the first movie. They don’t really spend a lot of time explaining the whole plot of the first movie which was good. It just jumps right in where it left off and focuses on specific points to explain this whole new section of their history/story. It also answered a couple of questions I had from the last movie without rewriting the story. Very well made in my opinion.

A very interesting saturday night. Friends and friends of friends showed up at La Frontera. We were there for a while, chatting and had a couple of drinks. Then it turned into fun with the cameras inside the car which I'm sure got annoying, but that's what happens. I always end up taking pictures while in the car. Our final party destination couldn't be documented so...your loss. The night ended with me making breakfast at 5:30am and very tired.

For years now, the light fixtures of my terrace have been occupied by Reinita nests. What's a Reinita? It's the PR national bird. They're pretty small, black feathered, yellow belly and two white racing stripes down their heads.

This is actually an old picture...has nothing to do with this particular story.

Well, one of these birds laid eggs in one of the nests like usual. Now, I don't really know what happened, but she apparently flew into the house one late night and my brother had a hell of a time trying to get her out. He says that she was hitting the mirrored closet doors pretty hard before she finally flew out the door. After that ordeal it seems that she has abandoned her nest. Two days ago I found one of the baby birds dead on the ground. So since then, can you believe that I've been feeding this other baby bird?

Of course you can! We feed the roaming chickens in the neighborhood! I can't just let the bird die if I can feed it. Baby birds are awkward looking since they have no feathers...kind of look like tiny vultures.

These are some of my favorite pictures of one of my dogs. Her name is Lasha and she's the elder doggie of the bunch.

Her age is sometimes an iffy subject, but she's around 13 years old I guess. She has a couple of health issues of course seeing as though she's up there in age. The first thing that happened was that her right eye's tear gland stopped producing enough tears, so she gets optimune everyday in her eye. Then came artherits in her hip and for that she takes Synovicre. As if that wasn't enough she also has cataracts and at times it seems like she doesn't hear you either. The hearing part I think it's just her way of ignoring us because as soon as she hears a faint bark somewhere outside, she's right there barking back. Fourthly, she developed a cough which turned out to be a colapsed trachea. That apparently is something common for old pomeranians to develop. All it means is that her windpipe sort of closes, so the small hairs of the sides touch...causes her to think she has something in her throat and she'll cough. It also has to do with the lungs. It's like asthma and for that she takes Aminophyline. Finally, last year she had a vagina prolapse and was operated on. Turns out she had a couple of begign masses (which are also common) and were removed.

She's been through a lot, but she's still pretty active when she wants to be. Or if she wants to sleep all day, that's what she does :)

Last thursday (Jan. 5th '06), I went bar hopping with Antonio and Andrea. Good times in Old San Juan. We went to this brewery that's fairly new. Well, I don't drink beer because I don't particularly like the taste of it. Peer pressure...I ended up having their sampler. Not a bad place actually and I only really didn't like the taste of their pilsner...Gross.

We went on to other bars and around Old San Juan sometimes they paint the walls of these buildings that are in the process of being fixed up and people will draw some random stuff on there. That night was no exception.

.....

Cool looking wall art that probably won't be there next time I make it out to Old San Juan.

Happy New Year!

Hope everyone had a good New Year's celebration going on. I spent it with the family pretty low key which was good. Although I did feel like I was in the middle of a war zone. See, all around me (various neighbors on all sides) people had their homestyle firework presentations going on. They'd been blowing up firecrackers, cherry bombs, other bigger things that go BOOM and fireworks in general since early that afternoon all the way through the wee hours of the new year. At one point I went outside to look at all the pretty colors and there was so much residue smoke that you couldn't see the night sky.

The funniest thing of the night had to have been compliments of Kobe. Kobe is our Yorkie dog. As everyone knows, dogs get very nervous and jumpy during the explosion extravaganza that is pretty much all of the holiday season. So at one point, I openned the fridge at the same time a string of loud BOOMS went off. What did Kobe do?

He went straight into the fridge and sat there!

I guess he was trying to find somewhere to hide and of course, the fridge is an excellent place to hide. :)

Last night was pretty interesting. I was at home finally enjoying the xmas present my sister gave me (a NAMCO joystick that connects to the tv and you can play Ms Pac Man, Galaga etc) when Tatyana calls. She says "Get dressed I'm coming to pick you up in 15 min". So I changed and we were off. We went to some friends of hers get together. There were interesting people there. By the end of the party people were talking about politics...the PR national pass time :) It was all about PR's status, independence, statehood, the US and outsourcing to India. I felt like I was back in school. I just sat back, listen to the discussion and smiled. Of course I have my own opinions, but it's so much more fun watching 3 guys gang up on the one dude's ideals. :)

After that intellectual beer driven conversation, it was time to go. We ended up at Brava (a club). As we walked through the hotel lobby I was thinking "damn, there're lots of Americans here...OH RIGHT...vacation...tourists...ok". When we got to the door the chick says "It's 12 dollars" and I was like "w-h-a-t-?", but we ended up getting in for free anyway. Upstairs DJ Su-Real was spinning some crowd pleasing electronica and downstairs...well, I don't know...reggaeton, hip hop mix. This is the part where Jo Ann would be proud. I only had 2 drinks the entire night like I told her I would. No drunken chaos to report. HOOO-RAY!!! hahaha. (Although I didn't get all crazy, I did see some craziness on the way to the club. We come up to a red light and I look over at the car next to us and I see this chick giving the driver guy a BJ right then and there. Uhm...ok then.)

I don't know about Chris and Mike though. They sounded happy trashed at 4:30am when they called me on my way home from the club. :) I should've let it go to voicemail and I probably would've gotten another funny 3 min rambling voicemail from them. Good times :)

Hm, the annual Baldwin School Alumni Xmas party :) There were people there from the '91 class all the way through the recent grads. This was my 10 year class reunion...out of 40 classmates, only like 7 showed up :) GO BALDWIN! hahaha. It was cool...from what I remember. Too much vodka. Actually, I had a drink to try to alieviate the pain from my toe. Yes, it's still messed up and this was the first time I wore shoes since Dec 13th. Shoes have stopped being my friend. So I drank lots and don't remember leaving the party. Lovely.
I know Suhail drove me home, that's about it...Gracias Suhail. :)

Whatever...enjoy the pictures. I need a nap.
